Police issue update after crashed Mercedes dumped in Marine Lake
Police have issued an update after a car crashed into Southport's Marine Lake. The incident happened at around 3.50am on Saturday, February 1, when the Mercedes crashed through the barriers surrounding the lake and careered into the water.
The bandstand was damaged in the crash. The driver was believed to have fled the area after an extensive search, supported by the Coastguard, Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service and the National Police Air Service helicopter, failed to locate them.
A 29-year-old man, from Southport, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident, perverting the course of justice and drink driving. However in an update today, Monday, February 3 a spokesperson for Merseyside Police confirmed he was released under investigation pending further enquiries.

Around five minutes before the crash occurred, a silver vehicle matching the description of the Mercedes EQA 300 was sighted by police on High Park Place, Southport, travelling at excess speed. Albany Road and Southport Promenade were both temporarily closed as emergency services attended the scene.
The car was later recovered from the Marine Lake with many bystanders watching the removal of the vehicle. Anyone with information is asked to contact @MerPolCC or 101 with reference 25000085908.
