A major search and rescue operation is continuing at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct today after a man went missing. A huge emergency service presence was spotted at the World Heritage Site on Thursday afternoon, with surrounding roads closed.

Police confirmed yesterday they were responding to "an incident concerning the safety of a man in the Froncysyllte area". The air ambulance, police helicopter, paramedics, fire service and police were all called in, with members of the public being urged to avoid the area.

Today police said the search to find the man continued. A police spokesperson said: "Ongoing activity is continuing in the area of the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct today as officers search for a missing man.

"Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance. Roads surrounding the area have since reopened."
