With the heatwave in full swing over the past few weeks, Brits have been firing up up their barbecues while the sun was shining.

However, a French family decided the garden was not for them and opted for one of the UK’s busiest motorways to cook a few burgers.

Unbelievably, the unidentified family thought the hard shoulder of the M6 in Lancaster was the perfect place for an impromptu grill.

Disregarding recent advice about the fire risks of having a barbecue in open spaces, the family got the flames going on Sunday morning, according to North West Motorway Police.

They tweeted: ‘Highways have just attended at an incident where a French family were having a barbecue on the hard shoulder of the M6 at Lancaster.

‘Remember the hard shoulder is for emergencies and not delicacies.’

People were quick to tweet their shock and amusement at the incident:

London Fire Brigade last week claimed that ‘careless and reckless members of the public are putting lives at risk’, and encouraged people to take extra care with cigarettes and barbecues as hot temperatures scorched the country.

They also called for a temporary ban on barbecues in public parks as figures showed fire crews have already attended six times as many large grass fires in London this year compared to the whole of 2017.
