Police issue warning after break-in, attempted sexual assault in Belmont Cragin

Police issued a community alert after a man broke into a building Friday in Belmont Cragin and attempted to sexually assault a woman, police said.

The assailant entered a basement apartment where the woman was sleeping on the 2600 block of North Lavergne Avenue, according to a news release Saturday.

The man beat and attempted to sexually assault her, police said. She fought off the man, who then fled southbound on North Lavergne Avenue.

Police described the assailant as Black, 20 to 30 years old, between 5-foot-8 and 6 feet tall and between 150 and 220 pounds. At the time of the attack, he wearing was black bottoms, a black hooded sweatshirt and black shoes.

No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at 312-746-6554.
