Police officer dragged along ground by car after it hit pedestrian

A police officer was dragged along the ground by a car as he tried to stop it after it hit a pedestrian.

The officer suffered minor injuries to his arm and face after the incident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday morning (29 May) in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.

Nottinghamshire Police said the officer was in Clumber Street in the town at around 3.39am when a member of the public was hit by a passing car.

As the officer approached the vehicle to speak to the driver, the car drove away – dragging the officer a short distance along the ground.

The car then crashed into a tree in nearby Haddon Road.

Nottinghamshire Police said a 23-year-old man arrested on suspicion of drink driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance, was treated in hospital for injuries sustained in the crash.

The member of the public did not need medical treatment and two passengers in the car were also unhurt, the force said.

Inspector Matt Scott, from Nottinghamshire Police, said: "This was a frightening incident for the officer involved, who thankfully was not seriously hurt.

"Sadly, this is yet another reminder of the potential dangers our officers face every time they step out on patrol to keep the public safe."
