A police officer is being treated in hospital after he was hit in the face with a lit firework.

The officer was responding to an incident in West Bromwich at around 3.30pm on Tuesday when the incident happened, West Midlands Police said.

It followed reports of a group throwing fireworks into a crowd of people on the town’s high street.

The officer’s injuries are not believed to be serious and nobody else is thought to have been hurt.

Sergeant Mike Bradley said: “This is a shocking incident and we take this kind of crime very seriously.

“We know how distressing this must have been for local businesses and the people of Sandwell (borough).

“We are currently assessing CCTV to identify those involved and would encourage anyone who filmed the attack or who has information that could help, to get in touch as soon as possible.”
