Police powers extended following shooting in Kirkby

A Section 60 order has been extended following a shooting in Kirkby. At around 8.55pm on Monday, September 30 armed police were called to the scene on Simonswood Lane following reports a man in his 60s had been shot in the leg.

The order gives officers enhanced powers to stop and search individuals and minimise further incidents, and will be in place from 2am tonight, October 1, until 2am on Thursday, October 3. Detectives said the investigation is in its early stages but they believe the man was shot in a targeted attack. He was taken to hospital for assessment and is currently in a stable condition.

A 41-year-old man, from Kirkby, has been arrested on suspicion of Section 18 wounding with intent and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life. The Order, under S60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994, incorporates the area shown on the map.

Knowsley Local Policing Superintendent Karl Baldwin said: "Our officers will be in the area in the coming days to assist the investigation of this reckless attack and provide a visible presence, and I would encourage anyone with information to come forward at the earliest opportunity.
