Police had to rescue two dogs from a hot car where they were left while their owners visited a brand-new shopping village.

Staffordshire Police said the dogs were shut inside the car at the new £160m McArthurGlen shopping village in Cannock, Staffordshire, on Saturday.

The shopping outlet opened for the first time on Monday (April 12) with stores selling dozens of designer brands including Levi's, Tommy Hilfiger and Boss.

Police said officers spotted the dogs, who had no water and had been left with a window only slightly cracked open, putting them in danger of overheating and dehydration.

They managed to get to them without damaging the car, rescuing them and taking them to a nearby police station.

The incident has been reported to the RSPCA.

The force posted pictures of the dogs sitting happily in the back of an open police vehicle as they shared a warning for people not to leave dogs in cars.

They said: "Another example of dogs being left in a vehicle parked at the new outlet, on a hot day in Cannock ...without any access to water.

"If you want to know how hot it gets in the car with a window cracked open and the engine off... you can try sitting in the car yourself.

"We've managed to pop the door open without damage, and these very hot & thirsty dogs have been taken to Cannock Police Station, should the owner wish to collect them.

"It goes without saying the RSPCA will be informed."
