Police Respond as Protesters March Through Tokyo on Olympics Opening Ceremony Day

Protesters marched through Tokyo calling for the cancellation of the Olympics on July 23, the day of the opening ceremony, local media reported.

According to NHK, the protesters said the Olympics are a risk to public health as new COVID-19 infections across Japan are on the rise.

The protests came amid a surge of COVID-19 cases during the city’s fourth state of emergency. According to Tokyo health authorities 1,359 new cases were reported in the city on July 23.
