A 'suspicious' incident which saw a child approached by strangers in Newport is not as first reported and there is no wider risk to the public, police have said.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has issued an update.

Officers said the incident happened on the Gunville industrial estate between 3.55pm and 4pm last Thursday, March 23.

A child was said to have been approached by strangers close to Dreams and Home Bargains, and offered sweets.

After reviewing CCTV and speaking to the school pupil involved, police said: "Following the most recent information obtained by police, we are satisfied that this incident is not as was initially reported and there is no wider risk to the community associated with this incident.

"We continue to encourage anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to report this to police on 101. Dial 999 if a crime is in progress or someone is in danger."

The incident led to three schools issuing a warning to parents.

An email sent to parents at Carisbrooke and Medina Colleges, and Carisbrooke Primary had said: "We will be reminding all students to head straight home tonight and to not speak to anyone they do not know."
