Police have seized a car which was being pushed along the M5 - and found it in a horrendously unroadworthy condition. Officers from Avon and Somerset’s road policing team received reports of “several” people pushing the clunker along the motorway.

When the officers arrived they found the car had no front brakes and one of its tyres was dangerously worn. A police spokesperson said: “Turns out the vehicle had no coolant, no front brakes, the front offside tyre had its cord exposed and the driver was not insured. “The vehicle was seized and the driver reported. Please ensure both you and your vehicle are legal.”

The Avon and Somerset force placed pictures of a blue Vauxhall Zafira on social media. The car has a large sticker in the back window saying “No insurance - seized by police”.

The force also put a picture of the worn tyre on X. It shows the cord, a reinforcement used to maintain the shape of the tyre. Tyre cords are made primarily of polyester, nylon, aramid and rayon. If the cords are visible the tyre is in danger of blowing out.
