Police seize 'bull-type' dog in North Shields as woman injured following attack on family pet
Police have seized a "bull-type" dog after an attack on a family pet in North Shields.
Emergency services were called to Mitford Grove in North Shields on Monday afternoon after reports that a large, bull-type dog had attacked a two-year-old miniature schnauzer, leaving it with serious injuries.
The owner of the miniature schnauzer suffered a broken hand when attempting to separate the dogs. A neighbour who lives on Mitford Grove is understood to have come to the aid of the schnauzer and her owner, wrapping the schnauzer's lead around the neck of the bull-type dog, forcing it to stop its attack on the smaller dog.

One eyewitness told ChronicleLive that they were traumatised by the attack. They said: "It had got out and it was the most horrific thing I've ever witnessed in my life.
"The dog looked dead, it was lifeless. I thought its neck was snapped."
The schnauzer suffered serious injuries in the attack, and has not yet been able to return home from the vets. A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At around 5.15pm yesterday (November 19), we received a report of a disturbance on Mitford Grove in the North Shields area.
"It was reported that a dog escaped a property and attacked another dog, causing serious injuries. A 57-year-old woman also sustained a broken hand while trying to separate the dogs.
"Officers have taken possession of the dog in question with the agreement of the owner. While a further assessment will be carried out, officers believe the dog to be a Bull-type breed at this early stage.
