Police have urged people to 'remain vigilant' as they work to disrupt terrorist activity in Coventry. Officers will be out in the city today (September 15) as part of Project Servator.

Project Servator aims to disrupt a range of criminal activity while providing a reassuring presence for the public, West Midlands Police said. It is regularly deployed in Coventry and has been used in the city and across the West Midlands since 2018.

Officers are specially trained to spot the telltale signs that someone is planning to commit a crime, West Midlands Police said. They will utilise a range of resources, including dogs, drones, CCTV monitoring and ANPR.

Police will be conducting patrols 'at any time' and have in recent months been seen on Broadgate and the Bull Yard. Deployments are said to be 'highly visible' but 'unpredictable.'

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Counter Terrorism Policing and West Midlands Police are helping to keep Coventry safe by deploying Project Servator across the city. Residents might see more officers than they were expecting to, but there is nothing to worry about.

“Officers speak to members of the public and businesses to explain more about Project Servator and encourage them to report suspicious activity, creating a network of vigilance and making the city a difficult place for criminals and terrorists to operate.

“Although deployments are different to normal policing operations, they are designed to be reassuring for the public and not cause alarm. If you see something that does not feel right, speak to officers or call 101. Always call 999 in an emergency.”
