A man was spotted carrying a knife in Gwynedd. Police were called to a disturbance in Caernarfon and when they checked doorbell footage they discovered William Smart had had the blade.

The 29-year-old admitted possession of the knife in a public place. A judge at Caernarfon Crown Court today gave him a suspended sentence.

Prosecutor Rosemary Proctor told how police were called to a property in Caernarfon at 1am on September 2 this year following a report of a disturbance. They found the defendant in the property. You can sign up for all the latest court stories here

Officers checked a neighbour's doorbell footage and it showed two youths and a short while later Smart was seen carrying a knife. The defendant was arrested.

Adam Antoszkiw, defending, said Smart pleaded guilty at the first opportunity. He is in full-time work and has a young child.

The exact details about what happened were not outlined in court. But Mr Antoszkiw said: "It's an extremely unfortunate set of circumstances from which I have no doubt he will learn."

The judge Her Honour Nicola Saffman told Smart there had been "a lapse in his thinking skills" that night and it was a "one off" incident. She gave him a four-month jail term but suspended it for 12 months.

He must do 20 days of rehabilitation activity and pay £420 costs and a £187 surcharge.
