Polish gym rebrands as a church to avoid coronavirus closures and local restrictions

From Runner's World

By now, you've already read how armed police shut down a UK gym after it refused to close while strict lockdown rules were put in place in the city.

The community gym in Liverpool wasn't the only fitness centre dealing with tougher messages, however, as a Polish gym manager in Krakow recently went viral after sharing the lengths she has gone to in order to stay on top of local Covid-19 restrictions. Namely, rebranding her gym into shop and a church so that it can stay open.

Writing in a Facebook post, the manager of The Atlantic Sports and Fitness Club in Kraków, Poland explained that instead of focusing on fitness, it will now be a shop where people can come and try out its machines and also the 'Church of the Healthy Body'.

In the Facebook post, Atlantic Sports' manager, Marta Jamróz wrote: 'Dear customers, we know you've been waiting for our decision...we were waiting for the regulation and we were hoping that despite yesterday's press conference of the prime minister, someone would be wise and change their decision... unfortunately we didn't make it.

'So we have to act ourselves. Since the gym cannot function – in our place from today we are opening an Atlantic Store with workout equipment...we invite everyone who wants to test our machines for consideration.

'Since fitness classes cannot function, religious congregation of members of the pn union are starting today at our club, 'Church of the Healthy Body'. Hard to believe? Everything is possible in this world. Enlightened Olek and Czcigodna Gosia invite you to special religious events today.'

Polish coronavirus restrictions mean that the entire country has been declared an amber zone, while more strict regulations are in place for the country's worst affected areas, which have been declared red zones. The Atlantic Sports and Fitness Club is in Kraków, which has been declared a red zone and has had its swimming pools and gyms closed to the public since October 17.

Jamróz claims that her decision to rebrand Atlantic Sports is not only for the health of her members but also to ensure the gym's 'survival' and to protect jobs.
