Groups of up to six people will be able to meet outside for picnics and barbecues Boris Johnson has revealed in the latest lifting of lockdown measures.

Describing it as "long awaited and joyful moment", the Prime Minister confirmed that from Monday groups will be able to meet in outdoor spaces including private gardens in England.

He said: "These changes mean friends and family can start to meet their loved ones, perhaps, seeing both parents or grandparents at once."

However, the total number of those gathering must not exceed six and social distancing must be maintained.

The Prime Minister told the Downing Street briefing that it would be possible to enjoy a barbecue with up to five friends if it is done "in a socially distanced way" and "provided everybody washes their hands".

He added that the Government "will put on the brakes as required" and warned viewers to expect "further local outbreaks".

Mr Johnson also announced that primary schools and nurseries will be able to reopen from June 1.
