Poll shows 61% of French people believe Islam is not compatible with their society

A new poll has shown that nearly two thirds of French people do not believe that Islam is compatible with their society.

Some 61% of people surveyed in the Ipsos poll believe Muslim beliefs do not fit in with the French way of life.

However the 39% of French people who do support Islam in France is in fact higher than it was in January 2104, when 37% supported it.

The current figure is vastly more than the 17% who believe Judaism is not compatible with French society and the 6% who oppose Catholicism.

The poll of 1,000 adults also showed a massive 79% of French people supporting the ban on wearing a veil at universities, while 77% of those questioned said they were also in favour of the burkini ban.

Polling also showed that most people in favour of Islam in France are Benoit Hamon supporters in the upcoming presidential elections.

Of those that support Islam, 66% would vote for Hamon, compared to 57% who would vote for frontrunner Emmanuel Macron.

Just 13% would vote for Front National leader Marine Le Pen.

Polling shows that Le Pen would win the first round of voting if the election was held this week, but would lose out in the second round when supporters of other candidates rally round Macron.

The poll suggests the far-right leader would pull in 25% of the vote, compared to 24% for Macron and 18% for conservative Francois Fillon.

But Macron would likely go on to resoundingly beat Le Pen in the two-way decider vote on May 7, with 62% of the vote to 38% for his rival.
