Constituents of Litherland in Sefton will be off to the polling stations today to vote in their ward's by-election. Residents have been without formal elected representation for more than a month following the resignation of disgraced former councillor, Paul Tweed.

Tweed's resignation subsequently triggered a by-election and opened up a vacancy for the Litherland ward seat which is being contested by six candidates. Polls are open today until 10pm and constituents can cast their votes at either Linacre Bridge Community Hub or Netherton Park Estate.

A by-election is only triggered by local government electors requesting a by-election to take place and requires two local government electors within a principal local authority area (not just from the ward) giving notice to the Returning Officer. Once the requests from the electors were received, it was decided the by-election would take place today Thursday, November 21 and the seat will remain vacant until someone is elected.
