Popstars from Europe who are huge in America

With names like David Guetta, Katie Melua and Adele heading across the pond, it looks like the outstanding talent of these artists is deservedly being recognised in the U.S. Who are they and where do they come from? Discover the popstars making a big impression in the U.S.

Katie Melua
After her sultry jazz tones became a staple at dinner parties the UK over, Katie Melua, 27, took her unique brand of guitar music stateside. Americans were particularly taken with the Georgian-born Brit's two latest albums – ‘The House’ and ‘Secret Symphony’, released in 2010 and 2011 respectively - both of which received a rapturous reception across the pond. She has built up an impressive discography since she broke into the music industry at the age of 19, with hits like ‘The Closest Thing To Crazy’, ‘Nine Million Bicycles’ and ‘The Flood’ well worth looking up by anyone who enjoys a bit of quality easy listening.

Adele
Despite being just 23, Adele has a huge following in the UK, thanks to her heart-wrenching brand of soul-pop that has become the soundtrack to break-ups across the nation. However, it's hard to keep such a colossal talent quiet, and before long American execs at Columbia and XL Recordings had snapped up the singer, and the U.S. was introduced to the moving lyrics and soulful melodies of albums ‘19’ and ‘21’ - named after the singer's age at the time of writing. Songs including ‘Someone Like You’ and ‘Rolling In The Deep’ are great for those in the mood for a self-indulgent cry.

David Guetta
Electronic music has exploded onto the U.S. music scene, and French DJ David Guetta is taking full advantage of this. The house music producer has a series of chart-topping albums behind him, and has spent the past few years constantly touring the world, building up his fan base along the way. All this hard work paid off in 2009, when his fourth studio album ‘One Love’ smashed its way into the international charts with massive tracks like ‘When Love Takes Over’ and ‘Without You’. He has collaborated with an impressive bunch of artists, with LMFAO, Estelle, Fergie, Nicki Minaj, Ludacris, Taio Cruz and Flo Rida among the best known.

KT Tunstall
Everyone will recognise KT Tunstall's first hit ‘Black Horse And The Cherry Tree’, taken from her 2004 album ‘Eye To The Telescope’. After achieving success in her native UK, the Scottish singer brought her acoustic pop to the U.S., but it was not until ‘American Idol’ contestant Katherine McPhee sang ‘Black Horse’ on the talent show that she achieved Stateside success. Since making a name for herself in the U.S., her career has gone from strength to strength, with albums like ‘Drastic Fantastic’ and ‘Tiger Suit’ demonstrating her evolution as an artist.
