A well-known Bristol baker has opened a new bakery at an indoor market on the outskirts of Bristol. Ben Fortune ran The Warmley Bakehouse before it closed in March due to rising costs, but has now opened The Market Bakehouse within the Indoor Market on Regent Street in Kingswood.

The popular baker reopened following his previous bakery’s liquidation, which was blamed on rising costs, rents and the ongoing cost-of-living crisis. A local customer set up a GoFundMe to try and keep the bakery open following the closure.

On Saturday, May 25, The Market Bakehouse opened for the first time after nearly three months away. Mr Fortune confirmed the news that the bakery would reopen back in April.

The bakery is serving a range of foods, including sourdoughs and fresh breads, which made the bakery famous in the local community. A range of cakes, including white chocolate and cranberry flapjacks and lemon drizzle cake is also on offer.

Posting on Facebook, Ben said (via The Warmley Bakehouse): “Thanks to everyone who came by and supported this wonderful venture. Great to see some friendly faces once I managed to get up there. Thanks for all the lovely comments about the breads and food, and also for the wonderful job the guys did in the café.”

The Indoor Market said on its website: “When the very popular Warmley Bakehouse found itself in financial difficulty in early 2024 and posted that it would have no choice but to close, we along with many, many others in the community thought it was a great shame. Ben Fortune has been crafting delicious baked products at Warmley Bakehouse for the last five years and making excellent quality bread products is most definitely his passion, so, the idea of The Market Bakehouse was born.”

Commenters on Facebook have lavished praise on Ben and the café, which also operates as a takeaway. One person said: “Should be proud of yourself, Ben.”

Another commenter said: “Great to have you on our doorstep,” whilst another added: “I was one of the first in there, such friendly staff. Will make a routine of going here.”
