Popular Battersea pub could get major rooftop extension to secure future
Plans have been submitted to extend a popular Victorian pub in South London by another storey to attract more customers. The proposed roof extension would provide another drinking and dining space at The Northcote, in Battersea, if it is approved by Wandsworth Council.
Young's, which owns the pub, submitted plans to build an enclosed roof terrace with a retractable roof above the three-storey venue on Northcote Road. The proposed retractable roof system means guests could sit inside or outside, depending on the weather. It would have a bar, drinking and dining area for around 103 people and plants.
The plans also include moving the main entrance to the corner of the three-storey pub, extending the staircase to the second floor and internal refurbishment works. New customer toilets would be installed on the second floor and the kitchen would be upgraded.

Application documents said the pub is losing trade during the summer months as it lacks outside space for customers, with limited tables on the street, resulting in an 'unsustainable business as other nearby sites can provide this offer'. They said the proposed extension is needed to maintain the business.
The documents added: "The property is currently operational but has not had significant investment for many years. Its appearance and state of repair, both internally and externally have begun to decline, requiring refurbishment to update to modern customer demand and ultimately to secure its contribution to the area for years to come."
The pub is believed to have been built between 1871 and 1881. A small outdoor seating area was created on the pavement outside the venue in 2018. Wandsworth Council will decide on the plans in due course.
