Certain brand new models could become much cheaper to buy under proposals reportedly being considered by ministers. The Government could subsidise some purchases of electric vehicles (EVs), allowing car firms to offer cheaper deals in a bid to kick-start sluggish sales, according to reports.

It could allow companies to offer low-interest or interest-free loans for the purchase of new EVs, significantly bringing down costs for motorists. It comes amid pressure to grow sales of electric cars before sales of new petrol and diesel models are banned in 2030.

Research suggests around half of drivers aren't keen to buy an EV, with costs being the main reason putting them off as well as concerns around battery life and charging points. More affordable access to EVs is seen by some as experts to driving sales.

Rhydian Jones, motoring expert at Confused.com said: "As we get closer to the 2030 ban on sales of new petrol and diesel vehicles, UK drivers are feeling the pressure to switch to electric cars. However, this proposed change could be welcome news.

"That’s as our research revealed that 46% of drivers are unlikely to get an EV with the biggest reason (68%) being that EVs are expensive to buy or lease. The cost of EVs is generally a sticking point for drivers, but the hope is that these changes will make greener vehicles more affordable.

"Currently, nearly one in four (23%) UK drivers believe they will still be driving a petrol vehicle in 2030. But with new incentives in place, more drivers may be willing to make the transition. Despite the concerns around costs of EVs, and the new VED (tax) laws coming into place for EV drivers in April, drivers must remember that there are still benefits to switching to an EV."
