A popular Caribbean takeaway has closed in Nottinghamshire, with its owner citing the changing eating habits of customers. Jerk Chicken has shut its doors in Mansfield Road, Woodthorpe after seven years.

Anthony Newton, who runs the business, said amid tightening purse strings he thought people preferred to spend their money on a sit down meal. “I feel like people want to sit down now and eat,” he said.

“A lot of people are struggling and want to make the most of the occasion. Takeaways are not the scene at the moment. They cost pretty much the same as a cheap restaurant meal.”

He added it was also difficult to attract staff, stating most of his employees were aged between 16 and 18. Three of those were let go due to the closure, but the business owner said they had second jobs.

Despite closing the takeaway in February, Mr Newton said the business will carry on in the catering industry. “It’s a brand, not just a shop,” he said. “There’s more money in catering.”

Jerk Chicken was forced to close for eight months in 2020 after being ravaged by a barbecue fire. However it rose from the ashes thanks to a £150,000 makeover.

Mr Newton said he was still hoping to open another premises in the future, this time “definitely” including seating.

“We’ve still got all the equipment, we’re going to wait for a suitable site to become available. Unless something good comes about we’re going to ride this wave out,” he said.
