A popular Somerset pub on the A30 has suddenly closed down. The Windwhistle Inn at Cricket St Thomas, between Chard and Ilminster, shut its doors earlier this month.

A whole raft of events for the Christmas season had been planned. But the pub’s Facebook page now says ‘permanently closed’, while the website just says ‘CLOSED’ in black letters on a white background.

However, St Austell Brewery who managed the pub, say they hope it will be reopen soon. They said the closure was down to the Business Partner at The Windwhistle Inn closing to close, and they will be advertising the vacancy soon.

A spokesperson for St Austell Brewery said: "Our Business Partner at The Windwhistle Inn has unfortunately decided to close and we are working with him on this whilst we look for a new Business Partner. We hope to have the pub open again as soon as possible. The vacancy and how to apply will be advertised on our website shortly."

The pub which sits on the brow of a range of hills has an panoramic view on a clear day and you can see all the way to Glastonbury & the Bristol Channel. The original building which houses the traditional bar dates from the 17th Century and was once a notorious haunt of smugglers, highwaymen, and cut-throats. Local folklore has it that if you looked like you had money on you, you would be lured or dragged down into the cellar and your throat slit.
