Portland State coach offers to buy beer for everyone at Saturday's home opener

If you're in Portland and you want to watch some football and drink beer for free, Bruce Barnum has a deal for you.

The Portland State coach said Tuesday that he's willing to buy a beer for everyone in attendance at the FCS team's home opener on Saturday. Portland State opens its home schedule against Western Oregon.

The beer offer doesn't seem to be limited to just one per person either. Barnum advertised the promotion during a radio appearance on Tuesday. From the Oregonian:

“I’ve got a deal for you,” Barnum announced, “anybody who heard me on your show... just say ‘I heard Barney on the BFT’ at the Barney Beer Garden and I’ll buy your beer.

“I’m not buying your ticket, but I’ll buy your beer.”

How many beers?

Said Barney: “All of them.”

That's a deal good enough to make us want to fly up to Oregon for the weekend. Tickets start at just $10.

Barnum has enough equity at Portland State that he can make an offer like that unprompted. He became the team's permanent coach in 2015 after the Vikings demolished North Texas 66-7. That was the team's second FBS win of the season — Portland State had shocked Washington State earlier that year — and it got Barnum elevated from interim coach status.

Portland State enters its home opener at 0-2 but those two losses were to teams at the top level of college football. The Vikings flew out to Hawaii for Week 1 and then lost at Washington State in Week 2. Honolulu and Pullman are two pretty contrasting destinations.
