An auto repair shop employee in Portland, Oregon, has been fired after refusing to fill up a black man’s gasoline canister because he said protesters use them to start “dumpster fires.”
Dom DeWeese posted this video on July 28 that shows his interaction with an employee at Jay’s Garage, a car repair shop and gas station in Portland.
“They’re refusing to sell me gasoline because he’s judging me and stereotyping me, saying I’ll start riots and fires,” DeWeese says in the video.
In the video, DeWeese says he wants to fill his canister to put gas into his lawn mower. The man in the video says he’ll put gas into his car or lawn mower, but not the container. The man confirmed to DeWeese that he was “picking and choosing” customers.
“Well, there’s dumpster fires. They get a can of gasoline and they start the fire,” the man says, referring to protesters.
Jay’s Garage said on Facebook that the incident was “completely unacceptable and appalling.” The employee was “immediately terminated,” according to the auto shop’s statement. Credit: Dom DeWeese via Storyful
