Millions of people will be heading on holiday this summer with June and July being peak summer time.

Many of us will be booking basic seats with no upgrade due to the cost of things being a little higher than we'd like. And of course you'd rather have more money to spend abroad than on a plane seat.

However if you want to try and nab yourself a free upgrade to a comfier seat with more leg room, then there are a few things you can try. And one of them involves what you do before you leave for the airport.

According to Money Saving Expert (MSE), you need to bare in mind that getting an upgrade will likely place you in cabins that are posher. Because of this, they suggest dressing the part to increase your chance of getting that much-desired upgrade.

They explain: "While an old t-shirt and flip-flops might be comfortable, an airline is less likely to put you in with its top-paying customers if you don't look the part."

People don't just go on holiday to soak up the sun and escape work, they also go for a special reason. On top of wanting to boost their vitamin D and unwind, many celebrate birthday's, anniversaries and honeymoons.

MSE add that if this is you, you should let the airline staff know. They say: "If you know a member of the airline staff, tell them, otherwise do it via a travel agent or drop it in while at the check-in.

"This trick is well-known and is regularly tried with check-in staff, so it can help to take a copy of your wedding documents. It won't always result in an upgrade, but you may possibly get a free glass of champagne and some special in-flight treatment"

Whilst these may not always work, they could be worth trying. Just remember to always be polite when asking and never to get abuse with staff who are only there to help you and ensure everyone's experience is as smooth and fast as possible.
