'Poshest town in UK' just 45 mins from Leeds named country's best staycation spot

Harrogate in Yorkshire, often dubbed "the poshest" town, has been named the best staycation spot in the UK. Just a stone's throw away from Greater Manchester, Harrogate clinched the top position, outshining other favourites like Stratford-upon-Avon and Anglesey.

The rise of staycations has seen many Brits opting to holiday closer to home, with the UK offering a treasure trove of beautiful destinations perfect for short breaks and longer holidays.

According to the Manchester Evening News, travel experts at the AA have delved into the best UK spots for a car-friendly getaway.

They considered various factors including accommodation options, local happiness levels, availability of car parking, petrol stations, and electric vehicle charging points to compile their "ultimate top 10 locations for the perfect staycation".

Harrogate triumphed with an impressive 'happiness rating' of 7.8 out of 10 and boasts the most activities (62) to keep visitors entertained, reports the Express.

Famed for its exquisite architecture, the iconic Betty's Cafe and Tea Rooms, RHS Harlow Carr gardens, and more, Harrogate is steeped in history.

Visitors can also enjoy the surrounding countryside, with attractions like Brimham Rocks just a short drive away.

The town first gained popularity in the 19th century as a spa destination due to its mineral-rich waters.

Nowadays, Harrogate offers a mix of historical allure and contemporary conveniences, making it an attractive destination for tourists and residents alike.

Valley Gardens is a must-see in the town, boasting a beautiful park filled with a variety of flowers, walking paths, and remnants of the town's renowned spa waters.

Another highlight is the Royal Pump Room Museum, which provides a glimpse into Harrogate's spa history, showcasing the town's evolution as a health resort.

In addition, Stratford-upon-Avon came in second place with a happiness rating of 7.6, over 6,000 parking spaces, and more than 60 attractions.

The town is best known as Shakespeare's birthplace and offers delightful walks and historical sites such as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Newquay in Cornwall took third place, offering 326 AA-approved accommodations, over 3,500 parking spots, and a happiness rating of 7.5.
