Powerful Winds Cause Damage Across Central Kansas

Record-breaking winds swept through central Kansas on December 15, causing severe damage.

As of Thursday afternoon, more than 38,000 people remained without power, according to Evergy, the state’s largest electrical utility.

This video taken by Nate Martell, who said he filmed it near the Kansas Highway Patrol Training Center in Salina, shows wind tearing off portions of the building’s roof.

The National Weather Service said, “Wind records were smashed for the month of December since 1996 for central and south-central Kansas. This includes Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, and Russell. Russell saw winds peak to 100 mph, shattering their old record of 67 mph.” Credit: Nate Martell via Storyful
