A pregnant mum and her toddler escaped a car just as it burst into flames in Hertfordshire. The car fire on London Road in Baldock took place at around 1.30pm on Saturday (February 1).

According to her partner, Dan Scott, Ellie Payne had left the car and was helping her two-year-old daughter out as it set on fire. Ellie was 36 weeks pregnant.

Nobody was injured in the fire. Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue's deputy chief fire officer, Mark Barber, said: "Our crews responded to this car fire quickly, within five minutes of receiving the call for help, and I’d like to thank colleagues in fire control and our firefighters for their prompt and professional actions.

"Our firefighters are highly skilled at handling fires, and those in the vehicle did the right thing in stopping and calling us immediately when they noticed smoke. I’m pleased that quick actions of our crews and those in the vehicle prevented anyone from being seriously hurt."

Firefighters had put the fire out within 30 minutes of arriving. A Hertfordshire Police spokesperson said: "We were called to assist Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service with a vehicle fire in London Road, Baldock, involving a white BMW 430D.
