The top flight’s top goal provider will finally be recognised with a formal award after the Premier League confirmed the institution of a “Playmaker Award”.

Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne is on course to claim the inaugural prize, his 15 assists this season three ahead of team-mate Leroy Sane.

De Bruyne has the best minute per assist rate (179.1 minutes) in Premier League history but needs to lay on an average of a goal a game if he is to tie Thierry Henry’s record tally of 20 in a season.

Henry said: “Scoring goals is one of the best feelings a player can have on the pitch. Of course, that would not be possible without the playmakers creating those chances.
