The pretty South London neighbourhood with RAF links where Star Wars actor Peter Cushing lived
Greater London's border has changed multiple times over the decades, meaning the city boundary has absorbed a variety of places. Now a suburb in Croydon, Kenley is the birth place of the Star Wars actor, Peter Cushing.
The makers of the movie 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' are reportedly being sued over his image rights, after his image was resurrected for the 2016 film. Mr Cushing passed away in 1994 from cancer.
He played Grand Moff Tarkin in the first Star Wars movie, 'A New Hope', back in 1977. He was born in Kenley, which was then in Surrey, in 1913.
The area is now surrounded by the Metropolitan Green Belt on three sides, and includes the open spaces of Kenley Common - 138 acres - and Kenley Aerodrome. During the Second World War, RAF Kenley played a vital part as a strategic airfield during the Battle of Britain, as the country resisted an attempted German invasion.
Links with RAF go all the way back to its beginning
In fact, Kenley's links with the RAF go back to its beginnings during the First World War, as planes were assembled and tested there for squadrons in France.
Another notable landmark is All Saints Church. It was built in 1870-71, and designed by James Fowler at a cost of £3,50. Historic Kenley says it was constructed of Kentish ragstone with an attractive red and black brick interior, interspersed with white stone.
In 1904, the tower had three bells and a belfry clock installed for £88. At the same time, the organ was replaced. Riddlesdown Caves are also worth a visit. During the Second World War they were used as air-raid shelters, and a company of optical instrument makers uses them nowadays.
This is because the stable air temperature is 'ideal for the precise engineering required in the manufacture of the instruments'. In addition, there remains evidence of an ancient Roman road in that a chalky pathway runs across Riddlesdown. It is a remnant of legions' marches London. As regards pubs, there are the Pig and Whistle and the Rose and Crown in Kenley.
