'Pretty' town a day trip from Cambs home to independent shops and Michelin star restaurant
Even though Cambridgeshire is full of things to do, from dining at award-winning restaurants to setting out on idyllic walks with wild ponies, it is a nice change to travel further afield for the day. One market town in North Norfolk has caught many visitors' eyes for good reason.
Holt, filled with quaint Georgian flint stone buildings, was named one of the prettiest towns in the UK by the Telegraph. It is known for its hidden yards, which are home to many independent shops.
The town's four hidden yards are thought to have been Victorian houses but now visitors will find unique shops and tea rooms. Appleyard features shops like Dragonfly Clothing, where you can find women's clothes and accessories like seed pearl necklaces. The Italian-inspired café The Core of Appleyard is a good place to stop off for deli sandwiches and a hot drink.

Another gem not to be missed is Bakers & Larners on Market Place, which features a range of departments from women's fashion to home décor. It has its own food hall where you can pick up some local produce to remember your trip.
The town is also home to Meadowsweet, a "charming" Michelin star restaurant. Housed in a restored Georgian building, the Michelin guide praised the spot for using only the finest produce and adding the "odd playful touch" to its tasting menu.
If you are looking for somewhere more casual, the cosy café at Byfords serves up an extensive brunch, lunch and dinner menu as well as afternoon tea. The Chubby Seal is a good place for a drink, offering the "very best craft beers from around the country".
If you are only visiting for a day and don't want to miss out on any of the town's history, you can follow the Holt Owl Trail. The trail takes you around 24 plaques that are located near places of historical interest like Jacobs Place and Feathers Yard.
Whether you are interested in learning more about the town or would rather spend hours dining and perusing the shops, Holt is a great place to get the family together for a road trip.
