As most will know, June is LGBT Pride Month, a time of love and celebration for the LGBT community - one where millions of people come together to attend events, show support and raise awareness. Many people, and a number of four-legged friends too...

Oh yes, a number of precious pooches have been snapped this month decked out in rainbow-hued attire to show support for LGBT Pride Month - and many as a result of a little tweet sent out by WeRateDogs...

The famed Twitter account, founded by Matt Nelson in 2015 to rate people's dogs through lighthearted Twitter posts, called on its 6.79million followers to send in pictures of their Pride-supporting pooches for WeRateDogs to rate and repost.

"Happy #PrideMonth everybody!" the tweet read. "If your dog is celebrating June by wearing rainbow or by being super good, send us a pic using #PrideMonthPuppo for a chance to be featured! 🏳️‍🌈🐕"

Naturally, this prompted a number of responses; snaps which have provided some truly epic content.

June was chosen as Pride Month on account of the Stonewall riots of 1969, which were a series of spontaneous demonstrations carried out by members of the LGBT community in New York in response to a police raid of the Stonewall Inn in Manhattan on 28th June that year.

A number of arrests were made and as the crowds grew, violence broke out, culminating in a series of protests which took place on that and subsequent nights.

In the aftermath, residents of Greenwich village came together to form activist groups campaigning for the rights of the LGBT community. Now, the Stonewall riots are largely considered a pivotal moment in the lead up to the 'gay liberation movement' (as it was then known) which ran from the late Sixties to the mid-Eighties.

And today, Pride Month is celebrated around the world. So, if you want your pooch to join in, what are you waiting for? Deck them out in rainbow accessories, hashtag #PrideMonthPuppo, and get posting that Twitter gold.
