Prince Harry's fresh start: Duke to step up global fight against Aids from new home in Canada

Prince Harry has touched down in Canada to rejoin Meghan and baby Archie for the start of his new life outside the royal family.

His reunion came as the Standard reveals Harry’s ambitious plans to expand his role as a charity entrepreneur across America.

As questions continue over how the Sussexes will fund their lifestyle, the Standard has been told Harry is focused on charitable projects, including helping to tackle Aids as a legacy to his late mother Diana, Princess of Wales.

Sources said the duke, who inherited an estimated £20 million when Diana died in 1997, already has a number of major charity events in the diary.

They will be staged across America with his charity Sentebale, which supports the mental health and well-being of children and young people affected by HIV in Lesotho and Botswana.

Chairman Johnny Hornby told the Standard: “The duke is a global figure and HIV is a challenge for the world to try to help solve.

“We know the duke has the ability to challenge the stigma that surrounds HIV and shine a light on these issues, whichever side of the pond he finds himself on.”

Harry, 35, was whisked away by a car waiting at Victoria International Airport on Vancouver Island just days after he and his wife agreed a deal with the Queen allowing them to step back as “senior” royals.

He was said to be desperate to be reunited with his eight-month-old son after a two week separation.

He was taken to Heathrow yesterday evening after completing an engagement at the UK-Africa Investment Summit in Greenwich, flying the 10 hours to Canada with BA.

He then boarded a WestJet flight for the 25-minute hop to Victoria on Vancouver Island, close to the £10 million waterside mansion where the family spent their Christmas break and are now reunited.

His arrival comes amid a privacy row over photographs taken of a beaming Meghan, 38, as she took her dogs for a walk with Archie in a baby carrier in a park on Vancouver Island.

Walking behind her was one of her Scotland Yard personal protection team and another security officer.

There are said to be “reasonable” limits on photography in Canada and Section 162 of the Canadian Criminal Code prohibits secretly watching, photographing or making a video recording of anyone — including celebrities — at a time or in a place where the person is entitled to expect privacy.

But in both Canada and the US there is little or no legal basis for preventing anyone from taking photos in a public place.

The Sussexes’s reunion comes after months of discussions over their future.

Speaking at a Sentebale fundraising event at The Ivy, Chelsea, on Sunday night, Harry said he and Meghan had hoped to continue serving the Queen but without public funding.

“Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible,” he said.

In an emotional address, Harry, who established the charity with Prince Seeiso of Lesotho jointly in 2006, went on to say he was not “walking away” and said that he and Meghan “will continue to lead a life of service”.

He told the audience at the Sentebale charity, founded to continue Diana’s legacy in supporting those with HIV and Aids, that he felt they took him “under your wing” after she died.

Harry was pictured yesterday at the UK-Africa Investment Summit, where he held a number of private meetings.

He did not take part in the evening reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for heads of government, ministers, business leaders and members of NGOs.

It was the first time William and Kate had hosted a reception for world leaders on behalf of the Queen and they were joined by the Princess Royal and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

As part of a deal finalised on Saturday between the Queen, senior royals and the couple, Harry and Meghan agreed they will no longer formally represent the monarch.

The Palace said they would continue to maintain their private patronages and associations.

On Tuesday, William was continuing his royal duties, making a speech at a United for Wildlife Taskforce meeting at St James’s Palace and holding more audiences as part of the UK-Africa Investment Summit.
