Prince Philip spotted driving without a seatbelt just days after crash - prompting police warning on road safety

The Duke of Edinburgh has been pictured back behind the wheel just days after escaping unscathed from a car crash.

Photos show Philip in a new Land Rover on the Sandringham estate, the royal family's Norfolk retreat near to which the collision took place, on Saturday afternoon.

His determination to return to the road comes despite concern the 97-year-old consort may be too old to safely operate a vehicle.

Anxieties are likely to be further fueled by one picture of his latest journey, which appeared to show him driving without a seatbelt.

Philip had been travelling on a public road before turning into the private land surrounding the estate, where he is under no legal obligation to wear a seatbelt.

The Duke was later “suitable words of advice” by Norfolk Police after the pictures were published.

A spokesman for Norfolk Constabulary said the forced had been alerted to the photos and the advice was "line with our standard response when being made aware of such images showing this type of offence".

Earlier, the Queen was seen driving past in a separate car wearing her seatbelt.

Norfolk Police are still investigating the circumstances of the crash on Thursday that left two women injured.

Prince Philip, however, walked away from the episode largely unscathed - despite the vehicle having landed on its side.

On Friday he attended the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn for closer examination, with palace aides now saying he has "no injuries of concern".

A Buckingham Palace spokesman said: “On doctor's advice, The Duke of Edinburgh visited the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn this morning for a precautionary check-up.

"This confirmed His Royal Highness had no injuries of concern. The Duke has returned to Sandringham.”

It is understood he privately contacted the other motorists involved in the crash.

On Thursday. Prince Philip pulled out from the B1439 road turning right onto the A149 directly into the path of an oncoming Kia travelling south.

The Kia crashed into the Land Rover’s driver’s side at speed, flipping the Prince’s car and sending it into a spin across the road.

The Kia veered off the road into a ditch in a similar direction.
