Prince William boasts to England Women football team that his daughter Charlotte is a ‘budding star’

Prince William has boasted to England’s women’s football team that his daughter is “a budding star for the future” as he paid them a visit ahead of the summer’s home Euros.

The Duke of Cambridge met with England Women on Wednesday at one of their training sessions at St George’s Park in Burton-upon-Trent.

He took part in shooting practice before speaking to the players as a group.

He was then gifted a set of football shirts with his children’s names - George, Charlotte and Louis - printed on the back.

After being presented with the shirts he told the players: “Charlotte wants me to tell you she’s really good in goal...a budding star for the future,” PA reports.

The Duke added: “She said, ‘Please can you tell them that’, and I said ‘Okay I’ll tell them’.”

He also praised the players for being “trailblazers” for women’s sport and women’s football and wished them luck ahead of the tournament.

"It’s a big tournament coming up for you, it’s exciting and everyone’s looking forward to it,” he told the group.

“I will be keeping an eye on what you’re doing and be watching the games with the children, and I’ll try to come along where I can to give my support.

"We’re all so proud of you, and you should be really proud of yourselves, where you’ve got yourselves. This is the pinnacle coming right up, the next few weeks for you, and I know you’ll do us all proud."

Players and staff praised the visit from the royal.

“We’re all very proud to represent England, and therefore representing the Prince and his family. It’s very important to us that we do everybody proud,” skipper Leah Williamson told PA.

The visit came on the squad’s final day as a provisional 28-player group, ahead of the announcement of the final 23 for the Euros later in the afternoon.

The UEFA Women’s Euros 2022 will be hosted by England in July.
