The Prince and Princess of Wales have come to the rescue of a London food bank targeted by thieves.

The royal couple donated to Southwark Foodbank after £3,000 worth of supplies were stolen in a brazen overnight raid on Sunday.

Criminals forced open shutters at the charity, which is operated by Pecan on Peckham High Street, emptying shelves and taking a laptop and phone used by volunteers.

The break-in left hundreds of families without vital supplies.

The food bank tweeted its gratitude: "A huge thank you to @Kensingtonroyal who have donated to the recovery effort following the theft of £3k of food supplies from @southwarkfoodbk."

Volunteers discovered the damage on Monday morning, describing the incident as "disheartening". On top of the stolen goods, the charity faced a £600 bill for repairs.

Police are investigating the burglary and reviewing CCTV footage showing a group grabbing items after forcing entry.

The royal couple’s intervention comes days after Kate revealed in a video message that she had completed her course of preventative chemotherapy following her cancer diagnosis.

She conveyed cautious optimism about resuming a limited number of public engagements by the end of the year.

The donation to the food bank is part of an outpouring of support for the charity. The food bank added: "All at @Pecan121a have been overwhelmed by the support from across society. Food stocks are being replenished now."

Anyone with information about the theft is urged to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
