Prince William has left royal fans much amused after asking them to caption his latest Instagram post.

In the image, the smiling Duke of Cambridge pokes his head around the large front door of his London home, Kensington Palace, while looking at presenters Dermot O'Leary and Clara Amfo, who are stood laughing on the grand steps.

His post has received more than 232,000 'likes' and over 2,300 comments – with bemused social media users eagerly taking up his instructions to "caption this" and leaving dozens of tongue-in-cheek suggestions.

Many gently poked fun at the prince, by pretending to reply in his voice.

One joked: "You’re not my Uber eats…"

Another teased: "No thanks, the wife has plenty Avon stuff!"

A third shared: "I can come out – but not till after tea!"

Meanwhile, a fourth added: "You’ve made it to the X Factor boot camp!"

And a fifth suggested: "Can you sign for this Amazon delivery please...?"

The mysterious photo of the trio was actually a behind-the-scenes shot from the inaugural Earthshot Prize Awards, which O'Leary and Amfo are hosting.

Created by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2019, the prize will be awarded annually, from 2021 to 2030, to five people each year who substantially help the environment.

The first awards ceremony will be held tonight at London's Alexandra Palace, with Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes set to play.
