Every year, the British royal family travels to Sandringham for Christmas. During a visit to the Mercian Regiment in Wiltshire today, Prince William revealed that this year, he'll be enjoying a holiday lunch with 45 relatives.
On Christmas morning, the royals attend services at the Church of St Mary Magdalene, near Sandringham, and greet members of the public who have camped out to catch a glimpse. Last year, those in attendance included King Charles, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and their three children, along with Prince Edward, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and their families. The royals' Christmas Eve customs are also well documented. Those members of the family at Sandringham gather and exchange gifts—a German tradition, Prince Harry wrote in Spare, “that survived the anglicizing of the family surname from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha to Windsor.”
Despite the size of the crowd this year, four of Prince William's family members likely won't be joining the rest of the Windsors at Sandringham: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. But the Sussexes are cultivating their own set of Christmas traditions stateside—including leaving out carrots for Santa's reindeer.
“I love the holidays,” the Duchess of Sussex revealed recently while hosting a festive dinner for Afghan refugee women, adding that her kids Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet are now “three and five, so every year it gets better.” She continued, “at first, I think as a mom with children you’re just enjoying having them there, but they’re not understanding everything that’s happening yet. But now we’re at the age where I just can’t wait to see it through their lens every year.”
