Princess Charlotte’s Godfather Secretly Married Her Teacher

Princess Charlotte will have a familial tie to Thomas’s Battersea when she returns to school next month.

No, really. The 5-year-old’s godfather, Thomas van Straubenzee, tied the knot with one of her teachers, Lucy Lanigan-O’Keeffe, back in July. To top it off, the newlyweds are currently expecting their first child together, according to The Sunday Times.

Van Straubenzee is a longtime friend of Prince William (they both attended the same prep school). They’ve maintained a close friendship over the years and even incorporated Kate Middleton into the mix when she married William in 2011.

On the other hand, Lanigan-O’Keeffe is a senior teacher at Thomas’s Battersea, which is where Princess Charlotte and her brother, Prince George (7), are currently enrolled. She also serves as an assistant head teacher at the Clapham branch of the Thomas’s schools, though we wouldn’t be surprised if she favors the Battersea location.

The wedding should come as no surprise to royal afficionados, since it was originally supposed to take place in April 2020. Although Princess Charlotte was set to serve as a flower girl, the nuptials were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Instead, the couple opted for an intimate ceremony on July 24 at Chelsea Old Church in London. Van Straubenzee and Lanigan-O’Keeffe plan to host a larger celebration at a later date, so there’s still an opportunity for Princess Charlotte to fulfill her bridal party duties.

Congratulations to the newlyweds!
