Princess Charlotte? Rush Of Bets At Bookies

Charlotte and Alice remain the favourite first names for the new princess, as royal baby fans eagerly await an announcement on what she will be called.

Odds on the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's second child being named Charlotte currently stand at 9/4.

At one point, a flurry of bets on Charlotte led to odds of 2/1 being offered by SkyBet, and all wagers were temporarily suspended.

Alice remains a close second at 3/1, while Olivia has become a late favourite, surging in popularity to 4/1.

Victoria and Elizabeth finish off the top five potential names with odds of 5/1 and 7/1 respectively.

Some pay-outs have already been made since the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge emerged from the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital on Saturday night.

Several punters had placed a bet on which colour dress would be worn by the Duchess as she introduced her daughter to the world.

Although pink was the favourite with odds of 5/6 - the colour worn by the Queen on an official engagement hours after her great grand-daughter's birth - Kate opted for a cream dress adorned with yellow flowers.

The odds of a cream outfit had been placed at 5/1, while the chances of a yellow number were ranked at 6/1.

Diana is widely expected to be one of the baby's new names, as a tribute to Prince William's late mother, and is 8/1 to be her forename.

For those taking part in sweepstakes, the prospects are not looking too good for more traditional names such as Mary, Grace and Florence.

Odds of these three forenames stand at 10/1, 28/1 and 50/1 - mostly unchanged since the baby girl arrived at Kensington Palace with her family.

The prospect of the Duchess of Cambridge naming her daughter after herself - by opting for Catherine or Kate - also seems unlikely, at 50/1.

It also seems a few brave individuals have also had a flutter on more unusual names.

Daenerys and Mercedes have just a 500/1 chance of being chosen by the Cambridges.

The same odds go for Camilla, which is the first name of the Duchess of Cornwall.
