From Town & Country

As is tradition, the Queen's granddaughter Princess Eugenie had her first tiara moment today on her wedding day. Most predictions were that she would wear the York diamond tiara, which her mother, Sarah Ferguson, wore to her own wedding to Eugenie's father, Prince Andrew.

The tiara is called the Greville Emerald Kokoshnik and was lent to Princess Eugenie by grandmother the Queen. The tiara was made by Boucheron for Margaret Greville, a British society fixture and philanthropist, in 1919. Mrs. Greville bequeathed the tiara to the Queen's mother-also Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen mother-when she died in 1942.

According to the royal family's website, the tiara was made "in the fashionable ‘kokoshnik’ style popularised in the Russian Imperial Court." The center emerald is a whopping 93.7 carats. Princess Eugenie is also wearing diamond and emerald drop earrings, a wedding gift from the groom.

According to the wonderful blog "From Her Majesty's Jewel Vault," Margaret Greville "was drawn to jewels with powerful provenances just as she was drawn to powerful people themselves. Among pieces said to have been in her collection were a diamond necklace rumored to have belonged to Marie Antoinette, emeralds reported to have come from Empress Joséphine, and a diamond ring with alleged ties to Catherine the Great."

The most obvious piece of jewelry Eugenie could have choosen for her walk down the aisle was the York Diamond Tiara. Worn by her mother, Sarah Ferguson, on her wedding day to Prince Andrew in 1986, the diamond and platinum tiara with leaf motiffs and floral scrollwork was commissioned from Garrard and is thought to have been a wedding gift from Queen and Prince Philip to their new daughter-in-law.

Fergie has worn the tiara on a number of occasions following her wedding, and it has remained in her personal collection following her divorce from Eugenie's father, Prince Andrew. See a few photos of Fergie in the jewels below:
