Princess Theodora of Greece Wore a Stunning Historic Tiara to Her Royal Wedding

This weekend, an American lawyer married a princess. Like a real-life The Prince & Me, Princess Theodora of Greece wed Matthew Kumar, a Los Angeles-based attorney on Saturday at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.

Theodora wore an off-the-shoulder wedding gown with a foldover top and embroidery throughout. The gown was designed by Celia Kritharioti, whose brand is the oldest couture house in Athens, founded in 1906. The princess, of course, wore a tiara—in this case, one that once belonged to Princess Margaret of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria and niece of England's King Edward VII.

The tiara traces back to Margaret and her husband Prince Gustaf Adolf, second in line to the Swedish throne. The couple fell in love in Egypt and announced their engagement in Cairo. The Khedive of Egypt then gave the bride the diamond Cartier tiara as a wedding present in 1905. It was later passed down to Margaret’s daughter, Princess Ingrid of Sweden, who ended up marrying the future King Frederik IX of Denmark.

The Greek royals began wearing the tiara in 1964, when Ingrid’s youngest daughter, Princess Anne-Marie, married King Constantine II of the Hellenes. Now Theodora is the seventh royal bride to wear this headpiece, called the Khedive of Egypt Tiara.

Theodora’s veil, too, is a family heirloom. It also belonged to her ancestor, Princess Margaret of Connaught. It’s made from antique Irish lace.

Princess Theodora and Kumar’s wedding has been a long time coming. The pair got engaged in 2018 and have had to postpone their wedding twice. First, in 2020, the wedding was delayed due to the pandemic and then, last year, delayed again when Theodora’s father, King Constantine II, died.

Finally, the couple was able to have their Greek Orthodox ceremony in Athens, with a number of royal guests. Theodora’s paternal aunt, former Queen Sofia of Spain, attended, as did former Queen Anne-Marie of Greece. The bride’s brothers, Crown Prince Pavlos and Prince Phillipos, were both groomsmen. The Crown Prince’s daughter, Princess Maria-Olympia and Arrietta Morales de Grecia, Theodora’s niece, were bridesmaids.

The Greek royal family released a statement about the wedding prior to the big day. It read, “The couple's desire to have their wedding in Athens reflects their love for Greece, the strong ties they maintain with the country and their desire to share Greek culture and hospitality and identity with their guests.”
