Prison Break fans were left stunned after one of the original characters was brutally killed off in the latest US episode.

Rest in peace, Paul Kellerman.

The reformed former Secret Service agent baddie, brilliantly played by Paul Adelstein, suffered shots to the chest and was helpless as Poseidon's henchman Van Gogh arrived and stood over him.

After some final words from Kellerman, Van Gogh shot him in the head.

Or did he?

It's a bit of a stretch, but devastated fans pointed out that we did not actually see Kellerman's dead body – and that the scene only showed Van Gogh and his silenced pistol in shot when the final, seemingly fatal bullet was delivered.

And let's not forget that Sara and Michael have both made resurrections in the past.

So could Kellerman still be alive? Adelstein has had his say.

"I don't see it as his swan song," he told TVLine, speculating that an unexpected and unlikely return may be possible. "If you listen very carefully, maybe there's a little sigh on the floor off-camera!

"I mean, it's Prison Break. In all seriousness, how can you ever really know if you should believe what you see?

"So as an actor, I'm a little bit in denial. I'm hoping that if there's more Prison Break I can be involved."

That said, Adelstein admitted that regardless of what happens, he loved playing Kellerman again for the revival series.

"If Kellerman is dead, or if the show is over and this was the last time I got to play him, yes, there was something nostalgic and sad about it," he said.

"But I never thought I was going to do [the role] again, so it felt like a bonus anyway."
