Pro-Democracy March Held in Sao Paulo Following Congress Attack

A pro-democracy march was held in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Monday, January 9, the day after supporters of former president Jair Bolsonaro stormed the country’s congress.

The march took place along Paulista Avenue and many marchers were seen carrying flags for CUT labor union.

Videos by Facebook user Albert Viana show a street blocked off as crowds filled the area, drumming, singing, and dancing. In the second clip, protesters chant while holding a large banner in front of an art museum.

Protesters chanted “no amnesty” referring to those who stormed congress, called for Bolsonaro to be imprisoned, and carried a large banner with the word “democracy” on it, videos show.

Local news reports said the event was organized by the political and social organizations Povo Sem Medo, Brasil Popular, and Colisao Negra por Direitos. Credit: Albert Viana via Storyful
