Probe into what sparked huge North Staffordshire fire that could be seen for miles
An investigation is underway into what sparked a huge fire that lit up the night sky and could be seen for miles. Residents were urged to keep their windows and doors closed as the blaze raged on Saturday evening (September 28), sending smoke billowing into the air.
Multiple engines had been sent to the scene after a large quantity of straw caught alight in Moat Lane, Bignall End, at around 7.30pm. Firefighters spent around three hours tackling the flames and remained over the weekend to dampen down any hotspots.
Staffordshire Police were also sent to the fire as a probe continues. A Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews have extinguished a fire on a farm in Newcastle-under-Lyme involving a large quantity of straw.

"Multiple crews went to Moat Lane in Bignall End just after 7.30pm on Saturday following reports of a large plume of smoke and flames. Due to smoke in the area, nearby residents were urged to close their doors and windows as a precaution while firefighters worked to contain the blaze at the scene.
"By 9.45pm, the fire was under control and damping down commenced. Firefighters remained at the scene over the weekend and today to ensure no hotspots were left over. Thankfully, no one was injured.
"Our colleagues from Staffordshire Police also attended the scene. The cause of the fire is still being determined."
