Procol Harum lead singer Gary Brooker was given a standing ovation by fans after he fell head first when exiting the stage at a concert in London but bravely carried on with the show.

Sporting a Basil Fawlty style head bandage, he reappeared for the second half of the show at the Royal Festival Hall which was marking the 50th anniversary of their hit A Whiter Shade of Pale.

He sustained a head injury and a suspected broke hand.

Later the band wrote on their website: "On the way out, GB tripped and fell on the stairs down from the stage: evident drama as he was eventually helped to stand. So the intermission was greatly extended, while a paramedic validated Gary Brooker's stated intention to go back onstage.

"His eventual, courageous re appearance, with bandaged forehead and nose, with one hand 'broken', was greeted with a standing ovation."

Brooker tweeted a photo of his bandages and said: "Ready for the second set at the festival hall."
