Prolific artist Ed Moses of LA's 'Cool School' dies at 91

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Ed Moses, the prolific abstract expressionist whose works helped transform Los Angeles to a major force in the world of modern art, has died. He was 91.

The artist's son, Andy Moses, says his father died Wednesday at his Venice Beach home surrounded by family members.

Ed Moses came to prominence in 1958 as one of the members of the so-called "Cool School" at Hollywood's Ferus Gallery. The institution was the city's first to bring to public attention some of the most prominent modern artists of the post-World War II generation.

Other members of the Cool School included Ed Ruscha, Billy Al Bengston, Robert Irwin, Edward Kienholz and John Altoon.

Moses' son said Thursday his father continued to paint almost daily until two weeks ago.
