I knew it was going to be a long night when an actual nun was onstage by 9.20pm. “I must confess that I recently prayed while in chapel, begging God to allow me to be a voice and instrument for human life,” said Sister Dede Byrne, dressed in her black and white habit, “and now here I am, speaking at the Republican National Convention. I guess you better be careful for what you pray for.” I guess!
A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday ruled that a Virginia school board acted unlawfully in preventing a transgender student from using a bathroom at his high school that corresponded with his gender identity. The Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on a 2-1 vote that Gavin Grimm, now a college student, is protected under federal law that bars sex discrimination in education and the U.S. Constitution's requirement that people be treated equally under the law. Grimm sued the Gloucester County School Board after officials at a local public high school refused to allow him to use the boys' restrooms.
In everything from her music videos showing off her body art, Cardi B is anything but shy. The rapper has 10 different tattoos (that we know of, anyway), and while some are small and subtle, others are bona-fide works of art. For a better look at her full collection, from the tiny tattoo behind her right ear to the mystery name on the back of her neck, check out the gallery to see Cardi B's many tats.

Since resuming federal executions after a 17-year hiatus in July, the Department of Justice has been injecting condemned inmates with lethal doses of pentobarbital, a highly regulated barbiturate. The department executed three murderers in July and a fourth on Thursday and had planned to execute Keith Nelson on Friday. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan ruled that the department was breaking the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FDCA) by administering the pentobarbital without a medical practitioner's prescription, agreeing with death row inmates who sued the government.
Only 17% of workers in British cities had returned to their workplaces by early August, underscoring the challenge for Prime Minister Boris Johnson to steer the country away from its coronavirus shutdown, data published on Thursday showed. The Centre for Cities said the data, based on mobile phone signals, showed no increase in the footfall of workers going to city centres between late June and the week starting Aug. 3. Johnson last month encouraged people working from home to get back to their workplaces to help the economy recover from its 20% contraction in the April-June period, the biggest fall among big developed economies.

While Boris Johnson, his fiancée Carrie Symonds and baby Wilfred were settling in for a bracing break on the west coast of Scotland, some 200 miles to the south east, Johnson’s nemesis was busily accumulating yet another dollop of political credibility, and hastening the end of the United Kingdom and of Johnson’s premiership. Briskly efficient, with fluency in bureaucratese and a taste for precision, Nicola Sturgeon’s daily Edinburgh coronavirus press conferences are, like ‘em or not, a masterclass of political presentation. No doubt her first concern has always been the health of the people of Scotland; but if, just a fanciful thought here, you understand, she might have also wanted to demonstrate that a Scottish government – and an independent one at that led by her – would be perfectly capable of dealing with a pandemic and anything else thrown at it, she has succeeded handsomely.
